Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is a plant whose root, and in some extracts also the leaf, is dried and extracted. Products differ mainly in the extract: KSM-66 is made from the root and standardised to about 5 % withanolides, Sensoril from root and leaf to at least 10 %, and many labels simply state their own percentage.

Compare the amount of extract per daily dose and the withanolide percentage, not the size of the capsule. Most labels give 300–600 mg of extract a day.

The EU has authorised no health claim for ashwagandha, so the product pages describe the extract and the dose, not an effect. Some countries restrict it, and those orders are not delivered there.

FAQ

What is the difference between KSM-66 and Sensoril?

KSM-66 is a root-only extract standardised to about 5 % withanolides; Sensoril uses root and leaf and is standardised to at least 10 %. Both are branded extracts with their own recommended doses.

What are withanolides?

The compounds an ashwagandha extract is standardised to. The label states their share in per cent, which is how two extracts can be compared.

Why don't you describe what ashwagandha does?

In the EU no health claim is authorised for ashwagandha, so a shop may not promise an effect. The product pages show the extract, its standardisation and the dose.

Capsules, tablets or powder?

The extract can be the same in each. Capsules and tablets are pre-dosed; powder has a bitter taste and is usually the cheapest per gram.
