Glucosamine, chondroitin & MSM
Glucosamine is made from the shells of crustaceans or, in shellfish-free products, by fermentation of corn; it comes as glucosamine sulphate or hydrochloride. Chondroitin comes from cartilage (bovine, porcine, chicken or shark). MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) is a sulphur compound made synthetically.
Many products combine two or all three. Labels usually give about 1500 mg of glucosamine a day; compare that figure, and the form, across products.
If you are allergic to shellfish, choose a product the label calls shellfish-free.
FAQ
Glucosamine sulphate or hydrochloride?
Both are forms of glucosamine; the label names the form and the amount. Compare the milligrams of glucosamine per daily dose.
Is glucosamine suitable with a shellfish allergy?
Only if the label says shellfish-free: most glucosamine is made from crustacean shells.
What is MSM?
Methylsulfonylmethane, an organic sulphur compound. It is made synthetically and sold as a powder or capsules, often with glucosamine.
Is there a vegan version?
Glucosamine from fermentation and MSM can be vegan; chondroitin comes from animal cartilage. The product page marks vegan products.
